Training and Resources for Schools
Around 5000 children are already receiving the benefits of the Global Schools programme in Mumbwa, Zambia. Designed and initiated by ChildFund New Zealand, this programme had now enabled 24 teachers in seven schools in Mumbwa to be trained in modern teaching methods and receive vitally needed resources. Due to the huge swell in class sizes in recent years, it is increasingly difficult for teachers to effectively teach such classes. They receive training in child-centred, child-friendly methods to ease the burden on the teacher and it has resulted in the improved quality of learning for the students.

“In my class, I have many at-risk learners. And after I implemented the new methods, I was so happy to see that the learners in my class started learning better.” Enedy Ngulube from Nangoma School, Mumbwa
The Teachers’ Interchange
Over the past two years , sixteen teachers from across New Zealand have now traveled to the rural Zambian district of Mumbwa and taken part in team teaching with local teachers for two weeks at a time. These kiwis immersed themselves into their partner schools lives, realizing first-hand the challenges for teachers and students. They have shared teaching methods and approaches, while recognizing the similarities and differences as teachers.
“The highlight of my trip was the music, songs and dance of the Zambian people. Professionally, I enjoyed the sharing of ideas, strategies and the methodologies used both here in New Zealand and in Zambia. Overall, I loved meeting all the people and making new friends. It is an experience I will never forget.” Julie Paerau, teacher at Red Hill School, Papakura
The exchange was then reciprocated by Zambian teachers from these partner schools, who traveled all the way across the ocean for the first time to gain an insight into the lives for teachers, students and communities here in New Zealand.

“As a teacher I have learnt a lot of methods and techniques involved in teaching and I have been activated on some methods which I have been ignoring. I have been so many places and eaten so many foods in New Zealand – experiences I will take home and share with all my school and family.” Melvin Moonga from Mukupi School, Mumbwa
Fundraising for Zambia, Advocating for ChildFund
Each participating New Zealand school raises $15,000 within a year. This funds the interchange, as well as the training programme and resources. One great aspect of the training is that the teachers graduate at the end of the year as trainers themselves, so they can go on and train other teachers in their area ensuring long lasting, sustainable change. The fundraising activities have included Zambian themed days at school, art auctions and town market days. Across the country, the schools and whole communities have raised money, and awareness for the work ChildFund is doing in education in Zambia.

“I have sometimes wondered about these sorts of organisations, especially where child sponsorship is involved. “Is my money getting to where it’s needed?” “Can the people be trusted?” “Is it a worthwhile cause?” I would be proud to stand up and tell anyone about the ChildFund team in Zambia and the work they do. They are honest, thoughtful, wise and dedicated.” Sue Smith, teacher at Red Beach School, Orewa
