ChildFund Emergency Appeal for Haiti
14/01/2010
ChildFund New Zealand is asking New Zealanders to contribute to an emergency appeal to support the relief and recovery efforts in Haiti after the massive earthquake earlier this week.
On January 12, 2010 a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti, killing thousands. The powerful earthquake caused major damage to the Caribbean nation already struggling with political violence and poverty. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere where 85 per cent of people already live in poverty.
ChildFund New Zealand chief executive Paul Brown says that communications are extremely difficult.
“Accurate information is still scarce, but it is clear that the consequences are severe and many children are among the victims. ChildFund is joining forces with a partner on the ground in Haiti and urgently need donations to help the Haitian earthquake victims.”
ChildFund International's vice president in the Americas Region Dula James who has experience working in Haiti says children especially will face complex challenges following this tragedy.
“We know that even before this disaster children in Haiti were deprived of basic necessities, education and safety.”
Donations to ChildFund’s Haiti Emergency Appeal can be made by calling 0800 223 111 or at www.childfund.org.nz.
