Gifts that Grow: Classroom Surprises

1/09/2008

During the crisis that arose after Timor Leste's independence from Indonesia in 1999, many school buildings and facilities were destroyed. This included books, chairs, blackboards, chalk and tables.

Teachers had to educate children with no resources. Children had to try and learn in the barest of conditions, with nothing to sit on but bricks, no tables or desks, and no books.

Thanks to the 'Classroom Surprises' distributed through ChildFund between April and June this year in the capital Dili, the teachers now have the aids they need to be able to educate. The children have books to read and write in and no longer have to sit on the floor or on bricks.

And most of all they have brighter futures, giving them the opportunity to grow up with the skills and education they need to be able to earn an income and leave poverty behind.

Thank you to everyone who generously donated 'Classroom Surprises' last year - they are truly gifts that keep on GROWING.

Give children in need the gift of a blackboard for $60 or a study pack for $23.
