In the Chongwe District in Zambia, thousands of students are unable to participate in sports because their schools cannot afford to purchase equipment. Thanks to generous Gifts that Grow purchases, 4,643 children and youth in four basic schools can now take part in their district’s annual sports tournaments. These four schools received balls and jerseys from Kiwi Gifts that Grow shoppers, giving them the chance to play.

Sport is essential for child and youth development. It not only provides opportunities for exercise, it enables participants to learn valuable lessons about team work, dedication and commitment to a cause, planning and organising.

Kapete Basic School is one of the four schools that received a set of football and netball jerseys and balls this year. Sports Teacher, Mr. Silvestor Mazila was elated to receive the sports equipment.

The soccer and netballs wouldn’t have come at a better time than this one,” said Mr. Mazila. “We sincerely thank all those who contributed to this effort and wish them more blessings.”

Mr. Mazila told ChildFund staff that beyond the other benefits of sports, there will be increased school attendance because children will be looking forward to playing netball and football after classes.
