Donations from generous Kiwis are paving the way for a better future for the children of Batticaloa.
Education is important. But in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka, nearly 15% of primary and secondary school students lack basic literacy and numeracy skills. As one of our projects there, we’re working closely with the local education authorities and schools to improve education for the children.
Play materials for vulnerable children
Toys and games are not only fun for kids, they also help them learn. However vulnerable children were missing out on the opportunity to play, without any toys there was little to keep them entertained at home.
During house visits, we asked parents to help us identify children that could receive play materials to help them learn and keep them busy around the home.
The result meant that 47 children were given toys to play with. These included some great toys like rocking chairs, toy cars and tricycles.
Not only are the play materials fun for the children, they’re also giving them the opportunity to do some physical exercise while in their homes. They also allow them to keep busy, without the toys the children often stayed at home without anything to do.
Literacy classes are helping children learn
We’re continuing projects to improve literacy skills of the children in 6 villages in Batticaloa. So far, 143 children have benefited from the programmes, allowing them to improve their reading and writing skills.
The results are looking good too. There’s a noticeable improvement in the literacy skills of the children attending the classes. In fact, they’re even asking their peers to help them out with their studies too.
An added bonus of this is that some of the sponsored children in Sri Lanka, are now writing their own letters to their sponsors.
