Just over a year ago the 1-tok Kaunselin Helpim Lain was launched in Papua New Guinea to aid those seeking support against domestic abuse. Over the course of one year, qualified tele-counsellors provided crisis counselling and information to 1,653 callers in need.  Many of the users called because they were concerned about their welfare or the welfare of family members, including children.

The top three incidents prompting these calls were:

1.) emotional abuse
2.) physical violence
3.) threats of harm

Trained tele-counsellors responded to each situation uniquely, providing information, safety planning, crisis counselling and suicide prevention.  Where it was necessary, referrals were made to other services, including that of medical professionals, family support centres and the police.  ChildFund New Zealand is a proud supporter of the 1-tok Kaunselim Helpim Lain as it moves into its second year in operation.

Tenkyu tumas to all involved!
