Water and Sanitation in Sri Lanka

Only 25% of the 8,700 families in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka, have access to adequate clean water. The community is therefore at risk of water-borne diseases such as diarrhoea and the time spent, by girls especially, in collecting water could be spent on more productive activities.

Water and sanitation is a new priority for this community so ChildFund will bring water to more community members by working with the National Water Supply and Drainage Board to extend piped water systems to more households. We will then educate the community about safe hygiene and sanitation practices and build safe sanitation facilities for families.
